Religious or Spiritual?

I was in the heated debate with my wife last night about the existence of a creator or "God". I started of the conversation by stating (and it is written in the book inspired by God and professes to be the word of God) that God was a mass murderer who promotes torture, rape, violence against children, repression of women and slavery just to name a few. Her response to that was she is not "religious" so she doesn't read the Bible. She considers herself "spiritual" and therefore has a personal relationship with God and according to her it's not the same God of the Judea-Christian Bible. My question is: Can one reconcile there belief in a god and his/her/it's followers with a documented record of committing heinous crimes against humanity by simply dismissing the document?

I have many friends both believers and non-believers. I try not to flat out deny the existence of God because there has been no "real" evidence that he/she/it does not exist but what there has been over past 1500 or so years is more and more "natural" explanations/evidence to things we once attributed to a creator.

I will do my best not to come of as an Atheist-extremest because that whole notion is simply absurd. What I will do to anyone who would like to respond is back up what I say with facts and not just my opinion and above all else, I will not question your beliefs until you're ready to question your beliefs.
